Representatives from Tearfund visited the Free Church of Scotland offices this morning to share updates and experiences of the devastation and conflict in the Middle East.
Safa Hijazeen, Regional Director for Eurasia and North Africa (ENA) at Tearfund, based in Amman, Jordan and Robbie Morrison, Tearfund Scotland visited the offices, as part of a wider tour around the UK.
Safa, who joined Tearfund in May this year, brings inter-cultural, humanitarian, entrepreneurial, and church-based experience to his role. Being based in the Middle East, he navigates the challenges, beauty, and potential in the region. As he and the ENA team interact with church leaders and communities, the efforts of peace-building and reconciliation are paramount in their day to day lives.
David Meredith, Mission Director for the Free Church of Scotland, said: “The devastation in Gaza is beyond human comprehension. The culture of darkness and death is pervasive. It’s difficult to get accurate numbers but on average 300 people die each day because of the conflict. The carnage is now extending to the West Bank where nearly 800 people have been killed. These good people need cash.”
Tearfund’s partners in Gaza and the Middle East can provide support and vital supplies to people impacted by the conflict. In Gaza, Tearfund’s partner is providing life-saving medicine and desperately needed supplies to clinics, including child and maternal health clinics.
In Lebanon, Tearfund is working through local churches to provide food, mattresses and other essentials to people forced from their homes by the fighting. In the West Bank, it is working with the Diocese of Jerusalem who are providing healthcare and education to those affected.
