The Free Church of Scotland are thankful to have welcomed a number of new ministry candidates as well as ministers from other denominations over the past few years.
Potential applicants can begin this process in two separate ways.
Application to be recognised as a candidate for the ministry
An applicant would complete an application form, which includes sections to be filled in by their own minister, Kirk Session and representatives from Presbytery.
Following interview, so long as the Kirk Session and Presbytery representatives are in agreement the applicant should proceed to theological training at Edinburgh Theological Seminary, the Presbytery would complete the final section and send to Rev Dr David Ford, from the Free Church’s Board of Ministry (see page six of Yearbook for contact details).
The Board will interview the applicant, and if successful, will advise the individual that they are now a candidate for the ministry and what training they must undertake.

An application from an ordained minister of another denomination
The applicant will make contact within the Free Church Presbytery they normally reside in, and if they do not reside where a Free Church Presbytery exists, the application should go to a Presbytery to whose members the applicant is well-known.
They will receive an application form from the relevant Presbytery Clerk, which must be completed and returned along with the names and addresses of two referees.
References will be secured and given to members of the Presbytery, before the applicant is called for interview. The applicant will answer the questions contained in section B, with a result of the interview, references and the application form then sent onto Rev Dr David Ford from the Board of Ministry.
If the Presbytery is recommending the application to proceed, the Board of Ministry will arrange for a further interview in front of the Board’s members. Following this interview, the Board will make a recommendation or otherwise to the Free Church’s General Assembly.
