National Day of Prayer - Answered Prayer

November 9, 2017

In the run-up to this year's National Day of Prayer on the 30th November, we thought we'd share some stories of answered prayer from a few different people within the denomination. This first one is by Elaine MacRury.

I can hardly imagine facing each day without prayer.

For me, it is so important to bring my cares and concerns and also to ask for guidance in my decision making before God. I pray daily on my own but also feel the weekly prayer meeting or community group is also invaluable. We are told where two or three are gathered.... I am also part of a prayer quad which has been continuing for many years with trusted friends and we have seen many answers to our prayers.

I have experienced answered prayers above and beyond my expectations.  Many years ago my marriage had broken down and I needed a house for myself and my son. I was praying for guidance that we would be able to stay in the same area as I wanted my son to have as little disruption in his life as possible. We were out for a walk one night and I met a neighbour who was standing outside the garden of a house that was empty as the old lady had gone into a home and her son was now looking after the house. I had never really noticed the house before as it was slightly back from the road compared to the other houses. The neighbour I spoke to knew nothing of my situation so I went home and prayed about this house.

I decided to write a note and put it through the letterbox asking her son if he was going to sell or rent the house and if so would he allow me to have first refusal. I went to do this and to my surprise, her son who was in his 70's was digging the garden and I thought this is not what I had planned so I had to speak to him instead of putting my note through the door! He listened to me as I blurted out my story and then showed me the house and said it was for sale and would not advertise it to allow me time to get a mortgage. I was very blessed to get this house which I still live in and has felt like home from the first day I moved in.

I continue to pray daily for guidance and give thanks for all that God has blessed me with. Some of my prayers as yet are unanswered and I may never see the answer I wish but I know that God is in control and I trust in his plans and purposes.

I am looking forward to the National day of prayer in expectation of how God will answer our prayers on a personal, church and denominational level. What a privilege!
