The Big Free Rally welcomed 280 people as it celebrated it’s 20th anniversary in Smithton Free Church on Saturday 1st October.
The rally was first held twenty years ago under the vision of then Camps Administrator Calum Ferguson who believed the young people who had been to a Free Church Youth Camp over the summer would enjoy having a reunion with their fellow campers, leaders and other friends soon after camp. The Rally has been an annual highlight for many ever since.
On Saturday hundreds of young people travelled the length and breadth of the country, across land and sea, to get together. The day was hosted by two of the leaders of Comrie camp, Innes MacSween and Murray Graham while Andy Robertson, student of Edinburgh Theological Seminary delivered a series of talks through the day about what it means to be a Christian, God’s love and Jesus’ sacrifice.
Camps Supervisor Colin Morison and Camps Administrator Laura MacAulay revealed their plans for the 2017 Camps Programme which, along with all the usual tried and tested camps, will have the surprise addition of a new Senior Camp to be led by Honda and Christina MacMillan. Oswestry Senior will have new leaders in Andy & Caireen Robertson; and a brand new Shinty Camp will, God willing, take place on the Isle of Skye!
Shinty is the fastest growing sport in Scotland and the Free Church is keen to offer something new and exciting for P6-S2 girls and boys to try. Andy Murray (Livingston) and Sean Ankers will be the leaders and will offer coaching and training to the young people who will stay in the brand new Portree High School Hostel.
Not only did the first Big Free Rally take place in 1996, but a new magazine for teenagers was born: FREE! Free Editor Chris Nicolson and Susan MacLean spoke about Free magazine and how, over the last 20 years, it’s been offering articles and reports that are relevant to young Christians in today’s society. By way of a goodie bag, those attending the rally were given a vintage Free and a specially manufactured [email protected] wristband.
The 21st Big Free Rally is scheduled for Saturday, 30th September 2017.
