The Free Church community and beyond are saddened to hear of the death of the Rev. Murdo Macleod, former minister of Duirinish (Dunvegan, Glendale and Waternish), Isle of Skye.
After a career in construction Murdo took up his one and only congregation on the Isle of Skye.
He was much loved within the church and wider community having an unusual capacity to connect with a wide variety of people. He was the consummate parish minister.
On the death of John MacLeod of MacLeod, the 29th Chief of Clan MacLeod it was Rev. Murdo who was asked to conduct the funeral at Lonemore at the Clan Chief’s request.
He spent his retirement at Angus and latterly on his home island of Lewis. His former minister at St Peter’s, Dundee recalls the following incident which illustrates Murdo’s social ease and range.
‘One Sunday I was standing at the door with Murdo when a Norwegian punk with full regalia walked in. Murdo warmly welcomed him and asked him how his soul was. His response? He looked at his shoes and said he thought they were fine! I thought this was a great example of two people speaking the same language but not getting one another at all.
The following week he returned, and to my astonishment he asked where ‘the old man’ was. “Why? Why do you want to know?”. “Well, last week he asked me about my family, and I told him about my grandmother being ill. He said he would pray for her and today as soon as I came in the building, he came up to me and asked how she was and told me that he had been praying for her”. I have no doubt he had. The language of love overcomes cultural differences!’
We pass our sincere sympathy to his wife Ishbel and to daughters Mairi and Joan along with their families.
